The Globe Theater

My theater class got a tour of the Globe Theater this week. For those of you who don't know, the Globe Theater was where Shakespeare originally put on his plays. The original Globe burnt down but a new one has been built in the same area. We learned about the history of the Globe a long with the history of the Rose Theater. The two theaters had a kind of dispute between them. People would not go to both theaters. they picked one that they liked better and would only go to that one theater. the people would get into fights on the streets over which Theater was better. We got to tour both theaters. Right now, The Rose is more of a fringe theater. It is an archeological site so does not have a lot of room. The original Rose was found underground and they are in the middle of digging it up and will eventually reconstruct it. The Globe has been rebuilt and uses the summer season to put on it's shows. Only tours go through it this time of the year. The Globe does not have a ceiling. Shakespeare used the day light to light his shows.

The tour was interesting but our tour guide liked to talk and gave us a lot of extra information that wasn't totally relevant. I enjoyed the museum part of it that we walked through in the beginning because we could see the different costumes and other things from Shakespearean time. I am glad I got the opportunity to tour the Globe because it has a big history with the London Theater. I just wish I could have gotten to see a show their.

Cheers,
Allie
